Diligent Robotics, Moxi, expected to have a big impact on the healthcare team’s experience
SAN ANGELO, Texas – Shannon Medical Center has announced the launch of Moxi, a care team delivery robot in its care units, according to a hospital statement on Wednesday, December 15, 2021.
In partnership with Diligent Robotics, nurses and other members of the healthcare team can now call on a pair of robots named Moxi to help them with their daily tasks, improve overall clinical flows, and give nurses back precious time to maximize the care of their patients.
âAt Shannon, our people are our most important resource in providing care to our patients. As the country as a whole experiences a shortage of nursing professionals, we have explored other ways to support our care teams in the units, âsaid Pam Bradshaw, DNP, RN, FAONL, MBA, NEA-BC, Chief of Operations and Chief of Nursing at Shannon Medical Center. âWe hope that adding Moxi as a helpful member of the team will benefit our nurses by performing those tedious tasks that keep them away from their patients and allow them to better focus on the patients and their needs. I am so excited to see this project begin and to see the implementation unfold. “
Shannon Medical Center staff also said that after just a few weeks of testing, learning clinical workflows, and mapping the hospital environment, the two robots completed their first day and night shift and have helped nurses complete dozens of tasks on day one. As Moxi is fully integrated into the team, the current team of robots will focus on collecting drugs, lab samples and light equipment, saving nurses and the care team hours and thousands of steps. Automating delivery tasks also saves them the hassle of having to move away from the unit to complete these tasks.
Moxi was designed and created by Diligent Robotics, an Austin robotics company that develops artificial intelligence to enable robots to collaborate and adapt to humans. Moxi is equipped with an arm, gripping hand and mobility that allows it to carry light medical resources, navigate the hospital corridors and drop them off for nurses and other staff. .
“What we have seen is that nurses, especially during the pandemic, are working long hours and can spend an astonishing 30% of their time searching for and collecting supplies,” said Dr Andrea Thomaz, co-founder of Diligent Robotics. âIt’s a lot of time away from patients, which is why we designed Moxi to be the perfect teammate for nurses and healthcare workers. Having Moxi pick up and deliver items from point A to point B takes the worry out of staff. We want Moxi to be a capable and helpful teammate who supports, not replaces, valued nurses and hospital staff. “
Moxi helps hospitals run 24/7 by assisting clinical staff with non-patient tasks such as managing patient supplies, delivering laboratory samples, retrieving items in central supply, PPE distribution, drug delivery or any other clinical flow that the hospital unit may request.
Designed to be compatible with busy semi-structured hospital environments, Moxi’s key technical features include:
- Social intelligence: open elevators and doors on your own, don’t bump into people or objects in hallways, happily pose for selfies
- Mobile handling: Moxi can interact with the existing hospital environment, such as ADA doors and elevators, to access the entire facility without requiring a significant investment in infrastructure.
- Human-Guided Learning: The more your staff use Moxi, the more Moxi learns and adapts to your environment and the way you do things.
