Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha plans to make Phuket a world-class medical tourism hub by 2028, according to a spokesman for the prime minister. An international center for medical and public health services called “Medical Plaza” is planned, along with an international center for the care of the elderly, a palliative care center and a rehabilitation center.

Thailand’s medical and public health services have been internationally recognized, so expanding medical tourism will be good for the Thai economy in the future, according to Prime Minister Spokesman Thanakorn Wongboonkongchan. Medical tourism was the focus of Thailand’s International Health Expo 2022, held March 17-20 in Bangkok.

Phuket, in particular, will become Thailand’s medical tourism hub for years to come, with the new “Medical Plaza” debuting at an event called “Expo 2028 – Phuket Thailand” set to take place in six years. Medical Plaza will be a comprehensive international center for medical and public health services including an international center for the care of the elderly, a palliative care center “Jairak” and a rehabilitation center.

The success of the Phuket Sandbox program is a perfect example of how tourism can be combined with safe public health measures, according to the Prime Minister’s spokesperson. The combination of tourism and healthcare has the potential to be further developed and attract large numbers of tourists, especially now that Thailand’s healthcare system has gained international trust, Thanakorn said.
