MHTC envisions rebound in medical tourism in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, October 11 – The Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC) is gearing up for a rebound in medical tourism in the coming years, as more countries step up vaccination to safely reopen.

The agency takes the opportunity to capitalize on its experience of more than ten years in forging resilience and ensuring the sustainable and inclusive recovery of the medical tourism sector.

Malaysia’s medical tourism revenue is expected to generate between RM 480 and 520 million this year, thanks to MHTC’s range of regional collaborations and a five-year industry plan designed to boost medical travel and the resumption of tourism. In 2019, the country’s medical tourism generated RM 1.7 billion in revenue from 1.22 million healthcare travelers.

A plan for recovery

MHTC Managing Director Mohd Daud Mohd Arif said the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Industry Plan 2021-2025 is being finalized and will be launched this year to guide the industry’s recovery. , which has the potential to contribute up to RM7 billion to the economy in 2025.

Going forward, MHTC will continue to focus on its existing offerings, while enhancing the Malaysia Healthcare experience through new and diverse segments for the long-term sustainability of the industry.

Malaysia currently has a success rate of one in two fertile patients for in vitro fertilization. In addition, Malaysia offers advanced treatments including oncofertility and artificial intelligence technology for fertility viability testing, further strengthening the country’s position as a fertility hub in Asia.

Worldwide, there are 30 fertility centers accredited by the International Reproductive Technology Accreditation Certification (RTAC), eight of which are in Malaysia.

Over the past decade, the country has also grown in popularity as a hub for cardiology in Asia due to its expert medical fraternity and healthcare infrastructure.

The National Heart Institute (IJN) became the first hospital outside of the United States to implant a Micra atrioventricular (AV) pacemaker, an implantable device for treating a slow heart rate via pacing. Developments like this are attracting a niche group of patients to Malaysia who are looking for quality care that is both reliable and affordable.

Malaysia has become the third Asia-Pacific country best prepared to fight cancer in a study conducted by The Economist Intelligence Unit published last year, and is gaining an international reputation as a center of excellence against cancer.

“By leveraging our core strengths and cross-collaborations through our public-private partnerships, we believe Malaysia will be further propelled into the global landscape as a leading global destination for healthcare,” said Mohd Daud . Blue code in a recent interview.

Building resilient networks

To further foster collaborative approaches to industry recovery, this year will also see the return of insigHT – the region’s leading three-day medical travel market intelligence conference – centered around the theme “Forging resilience “, which will be held virtually from November 16 to 18. .

Hosted by MHTC, insigHT2021 will focus on how the global medical travel industry remains resilient to maneuver through uncertainties. “We expect to receive around 800 attendees from over 30 countries in Asia-Pacific, Europe as well as the United States, hosting over 40 speakers from different regions,” said Mohd Daud.

The global event will feature speakers from the World Health Organization (WHO), Mayo Clinic, United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), McKinsey & Co, Association of international air transport (IATA), AirAsia Bhd and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). For more details and to register, visit www.mhtc.org.my/insigHT2021.

This runs alongside MHTC’s mission to revive the industry by building on existing confidence in Malaysia as a safe and reliable healthcare travel destination in target markets such as Indonesia, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Singapore and Brunei.

“This will be done through advertising and branding campaigns, providing support and facilitating end-to-end infrastructure, including digital adoption, as well as consolidating Malaysia as a thought leader in health care travel, ”said Mohd Daud.

To achieve this, the MHTC works closely with member hospitals to determine other areas and markets to focus on, such as the Middle East.

Tourism Vaccine And Passports

Covid-19 vaccine tourism is a possible strategy as people seek to get vaccinated in a safe and trusted destination. Countries with an excess supply of vaccines could use this to attract travelers. However, the priority remains within each nation to ensure sufficient supplies for the local population, said Mohd Daud.

“Personal safety is our top priority, and we hope that the Ministry of Health (MOH) and other authorities will apply the right mechanisms to ensure that the right protocol is in place regarding the reopening of borders and vaccine tourism, ”he said. noted.

He adds that while it is possible to introduce vaccine passports to facilitate international medical travel, the use of vaccine passports is still widely discussed globally by organizations such as the WHO.

A growing number of countries are considering turning to Covid-19 vaccine passports as a way to open up and get people traveling. However, the WHO maintained in April that proof of vaccination against the coronavirus should not be required for travel, amid uncertainty as to whether vaccination effectively eradicates transmission of the virus, in addition to the problems of ‘equity.

In the meantime, Mohd Daud said the adoption of telehealth services by MHTC member hospitals has allowed the country to stay ahead of the curve and strive to ensure continuity of care for patients.

This ranges from improving the telemedicine infrastructure of hospitals to setting up drug delivery services and improving cross-border digital payments.

“We are working to build a robust digital infrastructure that builds confidence in the Malaysia Healthcare brand as international patients continue to receive on-demand care and consultations at World’s Healthcare Marvel.

“This will further solidify Malaysia’s position as a safe and reliable healthcare destination as we continue to build and facilitate a more sustainable and immersive healthcare travel industry. “

Masses scramble to provide housing and medical care as Haitian refugees arrive from Mexican border

“The federal government has abdicated its responsibility to provide much needed humanitarian protection and other forms of support to Haitian refugees,” said Iván Espinoza-Madrigal, executive director of Lawyers for Civil Rights.

Marie St. Fleur, a former state representative from Haiti, said Massachusetts must act immediately to support these newcomers.

“We are facing a humanitarian crisis that does not need to happen,” she said in a telephone interview on Sunday. “We’re better than that in Massachusetts.

Geralde Gabeau, executive director of the Immigrant Family Services Institute on Blue Hill Avenue, said his organization has relied on staff and community members to support more than 100 Haitian families, including women. pregnant, children and babies, who have arrived in recent weeks. from the Mexican border.

This assistance includes people opening their homes to new arrivals and donating food, clothing and diapers to families, she said.

“People opened their hearts and said, ‘Yes, I’m ready to help you because I know you’ve been through so much,’ Gabeau said.

Among the families who have arrived in Boston in recent days are Domingueson and his partner, Ghislaine, who arrived at the end of last month with their 1-year-old son, Ian. The couple, originally from Haiti, lived for several years in Chile, where they met.

Domingueson and Ghislaine, who speak Haitian Creole, were interviewed Sunday by Gabeau, who served as an interpreter outside the Roxbury house where they are staying. The Globe only uses their first names to protect the identity of the family. He left after being threatened with joining a gang, and she fled Haiti for safety reasons. Neither could find work in their home country, but hoped for a better future in America. In Roxbury on Sunday, they said they wanted to raise their son here.

As Ghislaine spoke, her son laughed and cooed in her arms.

“She said thank God that she is finally succeeding here in the United States,” Gabeau said, speaking on behalf of Ghislaine.

Thousands of people have fled Haiti in recent years, and more have emigrated following a series of disasters in recent months.

A deadly earthquake struck Haiti in August and claimed more than 2,200 lives. It came a few weeks after the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse in July. The country’s government has been stranded amid political turmoil and the nation has been rocked by rival gang violence.

The country, among the poorest in the western hemisphere, had been hammered by the pandemic. It was the last country in the Americas to receive COVID-19 vaccines and the government vaccinated less than 1% of the population, according to a letter from a group of Senate Democrats to Biden administration officials this week. last.

Haiti also struggled to recover from an earthquake that killed more than 220,000 people in 2010 and damage from Hurricane Matthew in 2016.

Last spring, the Biden administration announced an extension of protected status for immigrants from Haiti. At the time, federal officials spoke of security concerns, increasing human rights violations, poverty and a lack of basic resources, all of which were made worse by the pandemic.

Reverend Dieufort Fleurissaint, president and executive director of the True Alliance Center, which provides support to members of the Haitian community, highlighted the dangers refugees face if they return to Haiti.

“This is very serious, when you take into consideration the dangerous conditions in Haiti,” said Fleurissaint, including the turmoil, political instability and poverty, as well as the gang violence and kidnappings that have taken place. .

“Those who are already here could not return to Haiti,” he said. “It’s a death sentence, basically. “

Families arriving from Haiti are looking for a better future for themselves, he said.

“They just want to have a chance to live,” Fleurissaint said. “This is basically the argument we made to the US government.”

Local advocates have said the city of Boston and its Mayor’s Office for the Advancement of Immigrants have been heavily involved in meeting the needs of newcomers, but much more is needed.

Yusufi Vali, director of the city’s Immigrant Advocacy Office, called for greater action from federal and state governments, as well as local groups, to support relief efforts.

“The recent Haitian arrivals are extremely vulnerable families, and we are working with non-profit organizations to support them,” Vali said in the statement. “But we really need the federal and state governments and philanthropic organizations to step up. We cannot do it alone. “

A spokeswoman for the state’s Executive Office of Health and Human Services said Sunday evening that there is an established process in which states are contacted by the federal government to seek relocation or housing assistance for refugees.

“The Baker-Polito administration is awaiting information from the federal government regarding any request for assistance and information on potential eligibility for support services,” the statement said.

Several Biden administration officials declined to comment on issues on Sunday, including the current number of people allowed to enter the United States from the Mexican border. A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security said U.S. Customs and Border Protection would release September figures later this month.

Boston, with one of the largest Haitian communities in the United States, is a logical destination for those who fled, defenders said over the weekend. But many of those who arrived here recently are now facing removal proceedings in U.S. immigration courts.

Espinoza-Madrigal, with Lawyers for Civil Rights, said his organization had worked with Haitian Americans United to discuss the legal needs of 24 recently arrived families.

The arrivals his group spoke to have already been the subject of referral proceedings to immigration court by federal officials, he said, and hearing dates are scheduled in the weeks and months to come. Many must regularly register with immigration officials in Massachusetts, he said.

“The federal government is testing its ability to stay in the United States,” Espinoza-Madrigal said. “It does not appear that any of these families have benefited from immigration protection or assistance, which is deeply problematic given that Haitian refugees are fleeing life-threatening conditions in their country of origin.

Ochsner Medical Center first in state to offer robotic assist option for lung biopsy – The Observer

NEW ORLEANSOchsner Medical Center (Ochsner) is now offering patients a new, minimally invasive option for lung biopsy using the Ion Endoluminal System, a robot-assisted tool for bronchoscopic lung biopsy. On September 28, 2021, pulmonologist Ochsner Susan gunn, md performed the first robot-assisted bronchoscopy in Louisiana using the Ion system. Ochsner is the only hospital in the state to offer this technology.

Ion is designed to treat a difficult aspect of lung biopsy by allowing physicians to obtain tissue samples deep within the lung. The Ion System features an ultra-thin, ultra-maneuverable catheter that sails far into the peripheral lung, and compared to manual techniques, physicians have the unprecedented stability and optimal precision needed for biopsy.

“This tool allows doctors to reach areas of the lung that were not previously accessible,” said Dr Gunn. “The ability to offer patients this minimally invasive option is a game-changer for lung cancer care because we can share a diagnosis and treatment plan earlier, which leads to better outcomes. “

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in men and women in the United States. More people die from lung cancer than from breast, prostate and colon cancer combined. By 2021, it is estimated that 235,000 new cases of lung cancer will be diagnosed. For those most at risk, annual lung cancer screenings improve a patient’s survival rate for lung cancer. If a nodule is found when it is small and has not yet spread, it is more likely to be treated successfully. With new Ion technology, patients who choose Ochsner for their care can benefit from this minimally invasive approach to diagnosing and staging lung cancer while reducing complications.

“Robotic bronchoscopy using the Ion system is a significant advance in the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer patients, as it reduces the complication rate of the traditional diagnostic method from 20 to 25% to just 1 to 3% “, said Brian Pettiford, MD, MBA, FACS, thoracic surgeon, Ochsner Medical Center. “The Ochsner Cancer Institute, in conjunction with our Surgical and Respiratory teams, is working together to provide cutting-edge lung cancer care to patients right here in Louisiana and the Southern Gulf, proving every day that local patients do. not having to travel for high quality cancer care.

Providing patients with access to the latest innovative medical advancements, such as the Ion system for diagnosing early-stage lung cancer, allows Ochsner and Louisiana to take one step closer to our 10-year goal of a health status by 2030.

Cancer care at Ochsner

The Ochsner Cancer Institute has treated patients from 50 states and 28 countries at its comprehensive cancer centers located throughout the New Orleans area, St. Tammany Parish, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, and northern Louisiana. Ochsner is committed to providing exceptional cancer care where its patients live, in communities large and small at its cancer treatment facilities across the state, including: The Gayle and Tom Benson Cancer Center at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans; the newly opened St. Tammany Cancer Center, a campus of Ochsner Medical Center in Covington, one of the largest multidisciplinary neuroendocrine tumor programs in the United States at Ochsner Medical Center in Kenner and Ochsner Cancer Center in Baton Rouge.

Support services are offered through Ochsner’s state-of-the-art Integrative Oncology program, which highlights an important aspect of the institute’s multidisciplinary team approach: the social, physical and emotional impacts of cancer treatment. . Northern Arizona Healthcare Sets Schedule for New Flagstaff Medical Center Campus | Local

“We just dived a little deeper into the shape of the building, what this hospital might look like… but we didn’t make that detailed design effort until we understood what stood out in the room. city planning zoning, and we still have future community meetings scheduled to take place later this year, ”he said.

NAH plans to continue working at the schematic level until the plans go through Planning and Zoning and Flagstaff City Council. More detailed design work will follow.

“We don’t want to go very far without understanding what the city expects of us and what the committee expects of us,” Eiss said.

Due to its smaller size, ACC plans will be submitted and completed first.

Eiss said ACC design drawings would take about seven months, and hospital designs would take about a year.

Once the design drawings are completed, NAH will submit them to the city for a building permit.

“There is a zoning approval process, that’s what we’re going through right now [and] tells us what we can build, where we can build it on our site and clarifies the densities, heights – the aesthetics of the building, ”said Eiss. “But then after that, deal with the actual construction documents that our architects and engineers have put together and which we are going to build on the need to go to the public safety division for the actual building permit.”

UVa Medical Center to Spend Additional $ 30 Million on Employee Compensation | State and regional news

“Traditionally, and moving into COVID, UVa may have been behind the market for some time,” she said. “It’s been a double-edged sword to start behind the market, COVID exacerbating that, then the market changes. We have some catching up to do. COVID has changed the way the industry operates and it’s not just healthcare, it’s many different industries. “

Employees at the medical center will receive a merit raise this year, Horton said. About 40% of employees will receive an additional raise to meet the market for their jobs and specialties.

The salary is already built into next year’s budget, Horton said.

“We have a long term financial plan and we have built this compensation into this long term plan which starts in July,” she said. “But we have to do something for our people right now and the question was what will we do from now until July?” It is important to make sure that we are competitive in the market.

Officials will review the market information early next year to see what changes need to be made.

“In January, we will be looking again to see where we are in the market as there will be updated data,” she said. “We’ll see if we have more money and what we can do to move forward. We’re just going to continue.

To find the funds, the leaders of the medical centers sought to finance the balances and savings generated by the recent changes in efficiency at the hospital. They also tapped into savings to earn a year’s salary.

Manistee healthcare facility seeks to meet the changing needs of residents

EDITOR’S NOTE: This article is the first in a two-part series about a mileage project for the Manistee County Medical Care Facility.

MANISTEE COUNTY – After 60 years of operation, the Manistee County Health Care Facility has seen better days.

Since opening in 1961, the county-owned facility has provided a wide range of medical and rehabilitation services to its residents both short and long term. Now officials say investments are needed to restore the building’s aging infrastructure and meet the changing needs of its residents.

“Our building has worked very well for us for 60 years,” said administrator Joe Coleman. “We want to make sure it lasts another 60 years. “

Although solidly built, Coleman says the facility has long since started showing its age.

A major area of concern is the condition of a large network of deteriorating pipes found at the facility.

Cast iron pipes have passed their service life, buried under cement floors. Many pipes are leaking, rupturing and even bursting over the past two decades, resulting in a series of costly repairs.

“When they leak, they cause damage and we have to tear down cinder block walls to fix them (and) replace them,” Coleman told the News Advocate. “To replace them, you will have to tear up the floors and break the concrete in the middle of the hallway.”

As the COVID-19 pandemic has placed more emphasis on a good ventilation system, the heating, air conditioning, ventilation, plumbing and electrical systems are obsolete and require constant maintenance according to staff. establishment.

More recently, a dumbwaiter used by kitchen staff has malfunctioned and officials are unsure if they will be able to locate the parts needed to fix the decades-old elevator.

“No one is building the mechanics for this anymore, so we have a total rehabilitation amounting to $ 123,000,” said Joe Jones, plant operations manager.

Now officials are asking voters in Manistee County to consider a bond proposal worth up to $ 25 million that, if passed in the Nov. 2 election, would fund renovation and upgrading. expansion of the facility.

The health care facility was built in the late 1950s to eventually replace the Manistee County Farm, an institution that provided amenities to more able-bodied residents.

“The old county farm was a men’s quarter, a women’s quarter and if you were old and still able to move around, you milk the cows, you worked the fields, you worked the kitchens,” Doug said. Parkes, chairman of the Manistee County Department. the board of health and social services.

When it was built, the state-of-the-art medical center catered to more mobile residents. But as the needs of its residents changed, the facility struggled to keep up.

“The current building was a big step up from the old county farm building with its male and female wards. The existing building with its multiple services and semi-private rooms does not adapt well to today’s typical residents, HIPAA requirements, desire for privacy, the ability to accommodate visitors and medical equipment durable required, ”says the institution’s website.

Comparatively fewer residents needing bulky amenities like wheelchairs, oxygenators and stretchers meant the original layout could save space with narrower bathrooms and entryways than is currently recommended by the United States Disability Act.

Today, it is common for residents to require the assistance of two staff members for transfers to ensure the safety of the resident and staff.

“When this building was first constructed, most residents were fairly mobile without a wheelchair,” Coleman said. “The old private and semi-private rooms are too small for the equipment we have today – oxygen concentrators, wheelchairs, walkers, IV poles (and) tube feeding poles.”

“The staff are doing their best, but there is not enough room for them while still helping the resident safely to the washroom,” Coleman continued.
