When medical assistance in dying (MAID) legislation was introduced in Canada in 2016, Hospice Peterborough formed a committee comprised of clients, board members, community palliative care program staff and physicians palliatives to support the service.
They determined that Hospice Peterborough will not stigmatize those who choose MAID and that staff will follow guidelines from health professional colleges that allow health professionals to talk about MAID if the client brings up the subject and asks for help to access more information.
In 2019, the Peterborough Regional Health Center (PRHC) developed a program to help people at the end of life explore the decision to adopt MAID. Hospice works with PRHC to provide Peterborough with access to MAID and impartially supports those considering it by answering questions and helping navigate the choice.
“The Hospice Peterborough Board respects and supports a person’s choice for physician-assisted dying. Therefore, the board calls for the creation of an operational plan for medical assistance in dying at Hospice Peterborough,” the Hospice Peterborough Board of Directors said in a statement.
The Strategic Plan 2021-2025 Hospice Peterborough was developed last year to re-examine and redefine Hospice Peterborough’s position on MAID in their ten-bed palliative care residence. A working group has been formed and an internal process has been initiated to revise the MA.
This process included staff, board education groups and focus groups while considering community feedback. Review of provincial and national standards of hospice palliative care organizations, including the Ontario Hospice Palliative Care Network, Hospice Palliative Care Ontario and the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association.
