As of December 31, 2021, Fresh Start has treated 8,621 patients, providing 22,198 surgeries, with $53,325,191 in medical care donated from their clinics in San Diego and Chicago. Medical services are provided by physicians, clinicians, dentists and other medical professionals who tirelessly devote their days off to helping children in need and changing their lives.

Since 1991, Fresh Start Surgical Gifts has been dedicated to transforming the lives of underprivileged youth with physical deformities by providing comprehensive reconstructive surgery at no cost to the patient and their family. The children receive care at Rady Children’s Hospital, one of the nation’s top children’s hospitals thanks to a long-standing partnership. To continue their efforts, the Chicago-based Fresh Start Caring for Kids Foundation was launched in 2014, as a joint venture between Fresh Start Surgical Gifts and The Plastic Surgery Foundation, in partnership with the University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children’s Hospital.

All medical professionals give generously of their time and talent to provide highly specialized reconstructive plastic surgery and related treatments that are much needed. Every child receives the highest quality medical care and families are never billed for the services provided. All donations and grants are used to their fullest, and every dollar donated enables Fresh Start to provide five dollars in medical care. One hundred percent of contributions go directly to medical programs.

“We owe our success entirely to our volunteer medical team who wake up at dawn on a weekend with a smile on their face and the will to fulfill the dream of a normal-looking child on their day off,” says Shari Brasher, CEO. of Fresh Start surgical gifts. “We couldn’t do it without all of our amazing volunteers and donors who provide tremendous support.”

Many volunteers have been involved with the Fresh Start program for over 20 years and some date back to its beginnings in 1991, such as Steven Cohen, MD, an internationally renowned and board-certified plastic surgeon.

“I am incredibly humbled and proud to work with such an incredible organization that works tirelessly to change the lives of children across the country. It’s been so rewarding to work with these kids, many of them for several years, and to see their transformations is remarkable,” Cohen said.

Committed to removing barriers to access to high-quality medical care, the organization’s mission extends beyond a simple surgery or necessary treatment. The doctor every patient starts with is the doctor they end up with, no matter how many surgeries they need or how long it takes. Translation services allow patients to be cared for in any language, with many medical team members and staff fluent in Spanish.
