Medical Tourism in Germany – Hurricane Valley Times

Medical tourism has long become a well-developed field, with hundreds of thousands of patients choosing treatment abroad each year. Medical tourists are usually patients of different age groups, who do not have the opportunity (or desire) to receive the appropriate therapy in their home country, and treatment abroad is the best choice for them.

For which patients do they go abroad?

Medical tourism is travel abroad for medical care. According to international studies, patients choose treatment abroad for specific reasons such as advanced high-tech procedures performed by qualified doctors, attentive and humane attitude, immediate medical care without a long waiting list or savings.

Medical tourism in Germany is one of the leaders globally. Germany ranks second in Europe after Switzerland in terms of funding for the medical industry. The funds are used for improving the technical equipment of hospitals and for research in the treatment of cancer and other medical fields.

There are also reasons why people travel to Germany specifically, such as the qualification of doctors, the quality of medical services and equipment, and advanced treatment techniques. The examination and treatment in German hospitals follows international protocols. Hospitals only use brand name medicines made specifically for European Union countries.

University hospitals have research centers, so medical innovations are quickly incorporated into treatment programs. For example, robotic surgeries are used to remove malignant tumors without damaging surrounding tissue, and nuclear therapy is used to treat brain neoplasms.

Innovative treatment techniques

Oncology is a rapidly developing branch of medicine. Approaches to the treatment of malignant tumors have undergone great changes over the past decade. Modern chemotherapies with minimal side effects, targeted therapy and various other drugs have appeared. Radiotherapy for oncology has become more targeted and surgical treatment is now minimally invasive and less traumatic.

Treatment of cancer with lutetium-177 is a promising radionuclide therapy option, as the drug is delivered directly to the affected tissue, creating a high concentration therein. Lutetium-177 has optimal characteristics which allow the destruction of localized malignant tumors and is particularly suitable for patients with metastatic cancer. Lutetium treatment does not harm healthy tissue.

Lutetium PSMA therapy is a treatment technique that has shown good results in patients with resistant prostate cancer. Clinical studies conducted in different countries confirm that treatment with lutetium-177 is effective, well tolerated and has a good safety profile.

In European countries, treatment with Lutetium-177 requires short-term hospitalization. During the hospitalization period (3-4 days), the patient undergoes the necessary examinations, including PET-CT, the PSMA study and general clinical studies, receives treatment and remains under observation for 1-2 days.

The price of lutetium therapy for the treatment of prostate cancer starts at 8,378 EUR. To compare the lutetium price-177 therapy in different health facilities, visit Booking Health website.

Zimbabwe aspires to become a hub for medical tourism – CAJ News Africa

of DANIEL JONES at Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe
THE VICTORIA FALLS, (ACJ News) ZIMBABWE has suffered in recent years the ignominy of its dying elite in neighboring countries and abroad as its once thriving health sector collapses.

Now the government wants to see these roles reversed, attracting citizens of other countries to seek treatment in Zimbabwe.

The administration is committed to resuscitating the sector in its heyday at independence in order to attract patients from all over the world to seek treatment in the southern African country.

Zimbabwe aims to build on the latest advances in COVID-19 prevention and vaccination programs.

Despite its health sector in crisis after years of poor administration and governance, corruption and economic downturn, it has defied the odds and has been lauded for its response to the pandemic.

This resulted in people from neighboring countries traveling to Zimbabwe to be vaccinated.

Among these are citizens of South Africa, which has a relatively robust health sector and the country, alongside India, is the most popular estimate for medical tourism.

Victoria Falls, the resort town, was arguably the first city in Africa to achieve collective immunity. There are plans to build a medical center in the city to accommodate visiting tourists.

“What’s nice is we’ve hit 100% (immunity) here. Why not initiate health tourism here in Victoria Falls? Joked Vice President Costantino Chiwenga, who is also Minister of Health and Child Protection.

He was addressing his feelings to the Association of Healthcare Funders of Zimbabwe (AHFoZ).

Chiwenga said Zimbabwe has the potential to regain its former status as a net exporter of health services to the region.

“If we are rebuilding, we envision quality services in public sector facilities which should position Zimbabwe as a preferred destination for health services, which is inbound medical tourism,” Chiwenga said.

He recalled that Zimbabwe, at independence, had a flourishing and internationally recognized health services sector.

“You remember this country treated people from other countries,” he said.

The health sector is no more than a shadow of itself with thousands of medical workers leaving for greener pastures, the others almost always on strike and in need of medicine.

However, Chiwenga is optimistic.

“We still have excellent healthcare skills serving public and private institutions. Therefore, renovation and re-equipment must be accelerated as the panacea to resuscitate medical tourism, ”he said.

Chiwenga said the government of President Emmerson Mnangagwa supports public-private partnerships.

Shylet Sanyanga, the director general of AHFOZ, called for the modernization of infrastructure and for the government to guarantee quality and affordable services.

“We were the loudest in lobbying that patients should not go elsewhere for treatment. We have good skills and can use them to prevent currency leakage, ”she said.

A significant number of Zimbabweans have traveled mainly to South Africa for medical treatment.

Politicians – sometimes at the expense of taxpayers – and wealthy citizens fly abroad.

Ironically, Chiwenga is among them.

Former Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai died of colorectal cancer in a South African hospital in 2018.

Robert Mugabe, president between 1980 and 2017, died of advanced cancer at a Singapore facility in 2019.

MHTC envisions rebound in medical tourism in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, October 11 – The Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC) is gearing up for a rebound in medical tourism in the coming years, as more countries step up vaccination to safely reopen.

The agency takes the opportunity to capitalize on its experience of more than ten years in forging resilience and ensuring the sustainable and inclusive recovery of the medical tourism sector.

Malaysia’s medical tourism revenue is expected to generate between RM 480 and 520 million this year, thanks to MHTC’s range of regional collaborations and a five-year industry plan designed to boost medical travel and the resumption of tourism. In 2019, the country’s medical tourism generated RM 1.7 billion in revenue from 1.22 million healthcare travelers.

A plan for recovery

MHTC Managing Director Mohd Daud Mohd Arif said the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Industry Plan 2021-2025 is being finalized and will be launched this year to guide the industry’s recovery. , which has the potential to contribute up to RM7 billion to the economy in 2025.

Going forward, MHTC will continue to focus on its existing offerings, while enhancing the Malaysia Healthcare experience through new and diverse segments for the long-term sustainability of the industry.

Malaysia currently has a success rate of one in two fertile patients for in vitro fertilization. In addition, Malaysia offers advanced treatments including oncofertility and artificial intelligence technology for fertility viability testing, further strengthening the country’s position as a fertility hub in Asia.

Worldwide, there are 30 fertility centers accredited by the International Reproductive Technology Accreditation Certification (RTAC), eight of which are in Malaysia.

Over the past decade, the country has also grown in popularity as a hub for cardiology in Asia due to its expert medical fraternity and healthcare infrastructure.

The National Heart Institute (IJN) became the first hospital outside of the United States to implant a Micra atrioventricular (AV) pacemaker, an implantable device for treating a slow heart rate via pacing. Developments like this are attracting a niche group of patients to Malaysia who are looking for quality care that is both reliable and affordable.

Malaysia has become the third Asia-Pacific country best prepared to fight cancer in a study conducted by The Economist Intelligence Unit published last year, and is gaining an international reputation as a center of excellence against cancer.

“By leveraging our core strengths and cross-collaborations through our public-private partnerships, we believe Malaysia will be further propelled into the global landscape as a leading global destination for healthcare,” said Mohd Daud . Blue code in a recent interview.

Building resilient networks

To further foster collaborative approaches to industry recovery, this year will also see the return of insigHT – the region’s leading three-day medical travel market intelligence conference – centered around the theme “Forging resilience “, which will be held virtually from November 16 to 18. .

Hosted by MHTC, insigHT2021 will focus on how the global medical travel industry remains resilient to maneuver through uncertainties. “We expect to receive around 800 attendees from over 30 countries in Asia-Pacific, Europe as well as the United States, hosting over 40 speakers from different regions,” said Mohd Daud.

The global event will feature speakers from the World Health Organization (WHO), Mayo Clinic, United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), McKinsey & Co, Association of international air transport (IATA), AirAsia Bhd and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). For more details and to register, visit

This runs alongside MHTC’s mission to revive the industry by building on existing confidence in Malaysia as a safe and reliable healthcare travel destination in target markets such as Indonesia, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Singapore and Brunei.

“This will be done through advertising and branding campaigns, providing support and facilitating end-to-end infrastructure, including digital adoption, as well as consolidating Malaysia as a thought leader in health care travel, ”said Mohd Daud.

To achieve this, the MHTC works closely with member hospitals to determine other areas and markets to focus on, such as the Middle East.

Tourism Vaccine And Passports

Covid-19 vaccine tourism is a possible strategy as people seek to get vaccinated in a safe and trusted destination. Countries with an excess supply of vaccines could use this to attract travelers. However, the priority remains within each nation to ensure sufficient supplies for the local population, said Mohd Daud.

“Personal safety is our top priority, and we hope that the Ministry of Health (MOH) and other authorities will apply the right mechanisms to ensure that the right protocol is in place regarding the reopening of borders and vaccine tourism, ”he said. noted.

He adds that while it is possible to introduce vaccine passports to facilitate international medical travel, the use of vaccine passports is still widely discussed globally by organizations such as the WHO.

A growing number of countries are considering turning to Covid-19 vaccine passports as a way to open up and get people traveling. However, the WHO maintained in April that proof of vaccination against the coronavirus should not be required for travel, amid uncertainty as to whether vaccination effectively eradicates transmission of the virus, in addition to the problems of ‘equity.

In the meantime, Mohd Daud said the adoption of telehealth services by MHTC member hospitals has allowed the country to stay ahead of the curve and strive to ensure continuity of care for patients.

This ranges from improving the telemedicine infrastructure of hospitals to setting up drug delivery services and improving cross-border digital payments.

“We are working to build a robust digital infrastructure that builds confidence in the Malaysia Healthcare brand as international patients continue to receive on-demand care and consultations at World’s Healthcare Marvel.

“This will further solidify Malaysia’s position as a safe and reliable healthcare destination as we continue to build and facilitate a more sustainable and immersive healthcare travel industry. “
