“We are working to transfer those who need additional medical care to the appropriate health facilities for treatment,” said a spokesperson for MOM.

However, a spokesperson for Sembcorp Marine said its employees may not be fully aware of current protocols.

About 1,400 of the dormitory’s 3,420 beds are occupied by Sembcorp Marine workers, according to Westlite Accommodation.

“The company understands that Westlite is following Covid-19 mandatory health tests and movement protocols,” said the Sembcorp Marine spokesperson.

As a 24 year military veteran and ophthalmologist, I understand the importance of the doctor-patient relationship. I saw first-hand the need for patients to receive timely treatment. However, prior authorization created unnecessary administrative burdens for doctors and ultimately delayed necessary medical care for patients. As a result, it compromises the relationship between doctor and patient.

Throughout my time at Congress, I heard from patient groups, healthcare providers and healthcare plans about the urgent need for meaningful change. Because I understand the seriousness and importance of this problem, I am proud to support, along with a bipartisan group of colleagues, HR 3173, improvement Act respecting rapid access to care for the elderly, which will help ensure that Americans get the health services they need.

Unfortunately, prior authorization can cause delays and interruptions for prescribed treatment that can save an individual’s life. According to a survey by the American Medical Association (AMA), approximately 94% of doctors reported delays in treatment in 2020 due to prior authorization and about 30 percent of physicians reported it resulted in a serious adverse event for a patient.

When insurers deny coverage, doctors and staff spend many hours on the phone trying to appeal the decision. I have heard scenarios from doctors in my constituency where a practice will take a long time to submit a pre-authorization request, receive approval from the patient’s insurance company, and complete the procedure. Yet a few days later, after submitting the claim, will receive a letter from the insurer stating that there was no approval. As a result, the physician and practice must now devote more valuable time to interacting with patients to cope with regulatory bureaucracy.

I recognized the need to address the problem of overly onerous prior authorization requirements, which is why I am proud to support HR 3173, the law on improving the timely access of older people to care. I urge my colleagues in Congress to take the first step in streamlining the prior authorization process by swiftly passing HR 3173, so that we can ensure patients have timely access to care and a better relationship with their doctor. As an Iowa State Senator, I passed the necessary pre-authorization reforms that ultimately benefited both the patient and the physician and were not a costly expense. It is essential that we take similar steps now to ensure that patients have timely access to necessary medical care.

MANISTEE COUNTY – After 60 years of operation, the Manistee County Health Care Facility has seen better days.

Since opening in 1961, the county-owned facility has provided a wide range of medical and rehabilitation services to its residents both short and long term. Now officials say investments are needed to restore the building’s aging infrastructure and meet the changing needs of its residents.

“Our building has worked very well for us for 60 years,” said administrator Joe Coleman. “We want to make sure it lasts another 60 years. “


Although solidly built, Coleman says the facility has long since started showing its age.

A major area of ​​concern is the condition of a large network of deteriorating pipes found at the facility.

Cast iron pipes have passed their service life, buried under cement floors. Many pipes are leaking, rupturing and even bursting over the past two decades, resulting in a series of costly repairs.

“When they leak, they cause damage and we have to tear down cinder block walls to fix them (and) replace them,” Coleman told the News Advocate. “To replace them, you will have to tear up the floors and break the concrete in the middle of the hallway.”

As the COVID-19 pandemic has placed more emphasis on a good ventilation system, the heating, air conditioning, ventilation, plumbing and electrical systems are obsolete and require constant maintenance according to staff. establishment.

The health care facility was built in the late 1950s to eventually replace the Manistee County Farm, an institution that provided amenities to more able-bodied residents.

Comparatively fewer residents needing bulky amenities like wheelchairs, oxygenators and stretchers meant the original layout could save space with narrower bathrooms and entryways than is currently recommended by the United States Disability Act.

Today, it is common for residents to require the assistance of two staff members for transfers to ensure the safety of the resident and staff.

“When this building was first constructed, most residents were fairly mobile without a wheelchair,” Coleman said. “The old private and semi-private rooms are too small for the equipment we have today – oxygen concentrators, wheelchairs, walkers, IV poles (and) tube feeding poles.”

“The staff are doing their best, but there is not enough room for them while still helping the resident safely to the washroom,” Coleman continued.
