Medical Tourism in Portugal Spain and Brasil
Medical Tourism and the Iberian Peninsula and Brasil
by David Hancock
Medical tourism is one of the fastest growing businesses in the UK. Nearly everyone in Britain knows of someone who is sporting a ‘new look’, whether it is a lovely set of boobs, pearly white teeth or a beautiful aquiline nose.
Ask them who did the operation, and the odds are you’ll get the answer: ‘Oh I had it done abroad.’ The reasons are obvious.
The price of private cosmetic and dental surgery in the UK is amongst the highest in the world and when it comes to medical surgery there are still long waiting lists on the National Health Service for anything less than an absolute emergency.
So if you are in pain from an arthritic hip, are overweight and have been refused gastric banding, want a full face-lift, or simply whiter teeth it is cheaper and easier to go abroad.
But where to go, that’s the question. In my best-selling book The Complete Medical Tourist, which was published in May 2006, I point out destinations around the world which offer first class treatments of all sorts at affordable prices.
I tell readers where to go, what they can expect, the top-class hotels in which to recuperate, how much it will cost and even explain the different surgical procedures.
It has been a handbook that many have carried around the world whether having a nip-and-tuck in South Africa or a knee replacement in India. But many UK citizens who could benefit from medical tourism are loathe to travel to countries they have never visited for numerous reasons.
They may distrust the condition of the hospitals and clinics even though they have been reassured they are of a high standard. They may fear being in the hands of staff who speak English only sparingly, and they may rule out places like Thailand or Costa Rica as simply being too far away.
Even the new European Union countries of Eastern Europe are often dismissed simply because of their association with a communist past. But since my book was published last year a major new destination for medical tourism has emerged – the Iberian Peninsular.
Spain and Portugal have long been favourite holiday destinations for millions of Britons every year. From the Algarve to the Costas, the British have swarmed over the peninsular.
And any holidaymaker who has been to a Spanish or Portuguese hospital in recent years for even the most minor of ailments will know how clean, efficient and technically up-to-date they are.
Small companies like the Barcelona-based Cosmetic Surgery Abroad and a similar company in Mallorca have seen the potential of medical tourism. But they are minnows compared to a brand new company with the 21st Century name Fly2doc which has its headquarters in Lisbon, Portugal.
It is the brainchild of João Vilaça Ramos and Duarte Caro de Sousa who aim to combine the cost effectiveness of medical tourism with a destination that UK patients know and trust.
And they are not merely offering the usual cosmetic surgery procedures but will provide across-the-board medical and dental treatment as well.
Everything from orthopaedics to cardiology and eye surgery will be available through Fly2doc.
‘We will be able to offer every possible kind of surgery through our established network of top doctors, hospitals, and clinics.
And our promise is that we can do it a cost that is competitive not just with other European medical tourism destinations but also with ones in countries further afield like Thailand and India,’ explains Sr. Ramos.
It will no longer be necessary to travel half way round the world to get the best deals.
The company is offering a complete package deal, much the same as holidaymakers visiting Spain and Portugal have come to expect.
It will include the surgical procedure, doctor, hospital, travel and hotel.
They will even arrange to have the patient picked up from their home in the UK if needed and personal managers will be on hand guaranteeing medical appointments and managing clinical data while the patient is in Spain or Portugal.
One of the first private health units to join the Fly2doc scheme is the impressive Coimbra Surgical Centre in the central region of Portugal which was opened in 1999.
Privacy is respected and all rooms have private bathrooms - a far cry from the wards in Britain’s NHS hospitals with their shared facilities.
The company has set up a user-friendly website at www.fly2doc.com where interested patients can get a quote for any treatment they may desire.
There is also a UK phone number they can call: 020 8133 5044. As an example, gastric banding costs around £8,000 in the UK for the procedure alone.
With Fly2doc it is around £5,000 including a recuperating holiday in the sun.
To the sun, the sangria and the siestas for which the Iberian peninsular is justly famous, it seems you will now be able to add surgeons and safety.

Our latest innovative product is related to Psoriasis, a pathology that has no cure, but can have lot of improvement.
MAPE TURISMO Y SALUD, IDI (Instituto de DermatologÃa Integral de Barcelona) and HOTEL TERMES de Montbrió, have developed an intensive program for the psoriasis treatment, oriented to the medical tourism option, by combining an innovative treatment with a wellness stay. The IDI specialist team: Dr. Segura, Dra. Solé, Dr. Soler, Dr. Boza, Dr. Julià , Dr. Guilabert and Dr. Bidet combine efforts to realise a personalised treatment per each patient. First, using the WEB site the Clinical Record of the patient is requested. This record is studied by the dermatologists’ team and a possible treatment is defined. Once the patient is in Spain, a first consultation is organised for the treatment prescription. During their stay at the Termes Montbrió Hotel the prescribed treatment is applied and will be supervised and followed up by the IDI dermatologists. The treatment length is 2 weeks minimum. During this period the improvement can be spectacular. The IDI experience in psoriasis treatments backs the possible obtained results. Nearest airports are Reus and Barcelona. People can enjoy at the same time of tourism and improving their health status. Learn more at: http://www.turismo-salud.com/index.php?sec=salud&cod_tratamiento=111&idioma=2
